I play at Ballina Centre 3 or 4 times a week with two of
those days being night time comps and the others training with a man
named Wullie Cree who runs the centre.
Ever since a young age, I have played competitively. These have included
Junior Squash Tournaments, Graded squash Tournaments for people of all ages
and both State and Australian Titles.
At Easter this year, my mother and I travelled down to Melbourne by bus to
play in 3 Melbourne tournaments.
I got runner-up (2nd place) in the Melbourne titles and I also achieved
runner-up (2nd place) in Victorian State titles.
Each year since about 5 years ago, I have travelled to Sydney with my family
to play in the State Titles.
In July this year, I and one other under 13 girl were chosen
to represent both our home town and also NSW at the Australian Junior Squash
Championships at Perth, WA.
We flew over with 10 other junior players who were selected from NSW. We
played in both the individuals event and the teams event. In the individuals
event, we ended up battling it out for 7th and 8th position. I won and that
made me 7th in Australia for Under 13 girls. In the teams events, we had
better luck and won over QLD by a total of 3 points for Under 13s teams
consisting of both boys and girls. We also won the overall teams event
championships making NSW the winners.

NAARAH RODWELL

Ballina junior squash star Naarah Rodwell has recently won the Imax NSW Under 15 Player of the Year, and now ranks No. 3 in the state for her age group. Naarah started playing at age seven and has won all North Coast age titles since. Originally coached at Alstonville by Brian Jarvis, she is now being looked after by Ballina Squash Centre's Wullie Cree, whom she rates highly. From a strong family background in squash, Naarah has had her most successful year, with a third in the Queensland titles winning her the special plate award. Her father, Garry Rodwell, was a leading player in Victoria, and her brother Barak Rodwell was the No. 1 Under 15 player in NSW in 1996. He now plays as a semi- professional in Canada, and hopes to join the North American professional circuit.
Naarah is a student at Alstonville High School, and is keen to make a career in the game. Her fitness will certainly not be a problem, with her father being the proprietor of the Alstonville Fitness For Youth Centre. For the moment, Naarah continues to train with Wullie Cree, and the future could see a visit to Malaysia to compete with some of the best in the world.

I am eleven years old, and I have been playing squash for as long as I can remember. I enjoy playing because it keeps me fit and active.
I play at Ballina Squash Centre three times a week- in the Thursday Night Comp, Friday Training with other juniors, and regular Saturday training. I am training regularly with Wullie Cree, the manager for Ballina Squash Centre, and recently with Robin Cooper, the ex- Commonwealth Games Team Member. Throughout my squash years, I have played at State Titles and have recently played two out of three Australian Selection Series and achieved second and third place. I am currently ranked number one in New South Wales for Under 11's and sometimes play Under 13's. I hope to hold to Under 11's ranking for as long as possible. Wullie Cree, Shaylee's trainer, had this to say about the upcoming star: "If Shaylee continues to train on a regular basis, as she has been in the past, there is no doubt she can attain her goal of becoming number one in Australia."
